Pet Emergency/First Aid

When you experience problems with your pet, it’s important that you always consult your veterinarian quickly. We can’t stress this enough. Consulting with your vet will ensure your pet remains safe and healthy. At Colbern Road Animal Clinic, we focus on prevention services so you won’t have to encounter any serious problems with your pet, but when you are faced with a first aid pet emergency, here are a few tips to remember:

Cuts, bite marks, puncture wounds – Using warm water, clean the affected area.

Heat stroke – If you notice panting, collapsing or a fixed/blank stare, transport your pet to a cool and quiet area. Also, provide the pet with water.

Car accidents – After an accident, your pet may be in shock. Take your pet to your local veterinarian as soon as possible following the accident.

Bee or wasp stings – If you are able to locate the stinger, remove it from your pet at once. Proceed to wrap the area on your pet and call your vet as soon as possible.

Burns – Apply cold water to burned area and call your local vet right away.

Eye Problems – Consult with your vet if you notice your pet squinting or unable to open its eyes. The quicker you contact your vet, the better.

Poison – Call your vet immediately if your pet has been poisoned. No matter what, DO NOT attempt to make your pet vomit.
